Although the actual birthday of Jesus Christ is not known, however, after the Intertestamental period, the early Christians Church leaders came together and agreed on 25th December to mark the birthday of our Lord Jesus Christ. Thus, Christians all over the world celebrate Christmas Day as the birthday of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
However, a Senior Pastor and General Overseer of the Deeper Life Christian Church, Pastor Kumuyi, was allegedly quoted as saying that those who celebrate Christmas will go to hell as the act is a worship of idols and unscriptural (Pulse.ng, 2013).
Jesus Christ said, ”Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free (John 8:32)”. Celebration is an important cultural tradition in Christian history. As Christians, we should pay no attention to Pastor Kumuyi any others who frowns on celebrating the birthday of Jesus Christ on Christmas Day.
I, therefore, stand with
Christian Leaders and most government of this world, for celebrating the
birthday of the maker of heaven and earth on 25 December. Jesus Christ died so
that we may be accepted by and be adopted as children of God. He reconciled us
with God and to worship Him in truth and in spirit.
The Bible says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life
(John 3:16). As Christians, we must worship God in truth and in spirit.
Celebrating the birthday of Jesus Christ is, therefore, part and parcel of
honouring and worshiping Christ as our Lord and Saviour.
The Scripture says Jesus Christ died that we may receive the power to become
the sons of God. This implicitly calls for the celebration of Jesus Christ as
our Lord and personal Saviour (John 1:12). The Bible admonishes us that as many
that have received him, to them gave the power to become the sons of God, even
to them that believe on his name:
Apostle Paul declared in Ephesians that “All praise to God, the Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the
heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. Even before he made the
world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his
eyes (Ephesians: 1:3-4).
It would be recalled that many
years ago, Pastor Kumuyi told his congregation to refrain from watching
television as it was idolatry. And after several years, Pastor Kumuyi realised
that he was wrong. He had no option but apologised to his followers.
I have no doubt that in the next few years, Pastor Kumuyi will realised again
that he was wrong. Thus, celebrating the birthday of our maker and the
creator of heaven and earth on Christmas Day will not lead us into hell but
salvation and eternal life.
As for my family and I, we will always celebrate Christmas to mark the
birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.
