The Nigerian Senate has agreed to suspend its plenary sittings if INEC fails to conduct Rivers Rerun elections by December 10 2016.

‎This was contained in a point of order raised by the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu who revealed that the non representation of the entire people of Rivers State is a breach of section 14 subsection 2c of the 1999 constitution.

Senate Leader Ali Ndume while contributing to the Motion, expressed worry over the inconclusive elections in the country, a trend he claimed could jeopardise Nigeria’s democracy.‎

‎The law-makers observed that Rivers State has no representation at the National Assembly, thereby denying the constituents of adequate representation in governance. ‎
‎‎
At the end of deliberations, the Senate mandated INEC to conduct the Rivers State election ‎on or before December 10 or the Senate will suspend plenary sitting indefinitely.‎

The motion was widely accepted by senators  who endorsed it.

Senate President Bukola Saraki appreciated the DSP, Ekweremadu  and the Senate Leader for the very important  motion on INEC.
“This is a very important motion targeted to improve our democracy we will go with the information from the INEC Committee” Saraki said.
