Port Harcourt City residents are currently living in fear for their lives as a cancer causing black carbon soot is emitted daily in very large quantities by Local Refineries operating in and around the city.
A resident when asked what was happening, had this to say “You know it is kpofire fuel that’s being used everywhere”, when I enquired as to what kpofire means she said “Well it’s the end products of oil bunkering or local refineries”.
“For diesel run generators, dome filling stations too stock it, so I guess its a contributory factor.
The thick black soots are all over Port Harcourt even inside the homes and it also makes the sole of your feet very black. Residents complain they inhale this black carbon in large quantities everyday.
The Nyesom Wike led government is yet to make an official statement to allay the fears of residents of the garden city.
As a result of the very dangerous dimension of the emission, residents of Port Harcourt City are planning a mass protest to bring the attention of the State and Federal government to their plight.
The people are worried that they are suffering from land and sea pollution as a result of oil exploration and exploitation, they are now faced with the worst of it all, air pollution which many attribute to local refining of crude.
